Welcome to Medway Youth Parliament's Website.
Medway has 20 mainstream secondary schools, made up of 6 grammar schools, 2 comprehensive schools, 1 bi-lateral school, 10 high schools and 1 independent school; 2 special schools and 4 special units catering for pupils at KS3/4. It is the intention that through the network created by this project every young person in these schools will have the opportunities for their voice to be heard by the decision-makers in Medway, nationally and internationally. Democracy is encouraged in schools and help and advice offered in running and training student councils.
The Medway Youth Parliament forms the hub of the participation work in Medway. A network has been created which enables issues to be raised and fed back through the members to a very large majority of young people in Medway. When young people from hard to reach groups are identified and settled in to any active participation they are encouraged to join the Youth Parliament to represent their peers. The staff team actively seek to remove barriers that may prevent participation by such groups.
Medway Youth Parliament has built an excellent reputation for its representation of young people in Medway, locally, nationally and internationally - and has been approached by national and international organisations to attend events and make presentations.
Youth groups throughout Medway are invited to have a representative on the Youth Parliament and offered help and advice in setting up or sustaining youth forums.
Comment from the chair of Medway Youth Parliament
Hello everyone! My name is Rosie and I am the new chair of the Medway Youth Parliament :)
For those of you that have been around for a while you'll already know that I was chair 2 years ago but anyway I’m back again and I hope this year we can achieve even more!
My main focus is going to be improving participation and extending our membership. I really want everyone to discover how they can get their voices heard. In order to achieve this and to commemorate our 10th birthday I hope to organise a 3 day residential called 'Your Voice' which will include political speed dating, debating, games and much, much more.
So, it’s our 10th year and I want to see it go with a bang! So if you’re a young person reading this come along get involved and get YOUR voice heard, if you’re an existing member keep up the work we’ve been doing and if you’re a councillor/mp etc then prepare yourself because the young people of Medway may not have the vote but they certainly do have the voice!
